Pain has a way of shrinking our world. Whether it is the ache of a body that will not heal, a heart broken by loss, or a burden that no one else can see, pain can make God feel far away.
Over my years in Christian ministry, I have sat beside hospital beds, prayed with grieving families, and listened to people carrying pain they could barely describe.
Sometimes people who are hurting do not need another explanation; they need reassurance that God has not forgotten them.
In 38 years of ministry, I have prayed with many people in the middle of their pain. I have learned that the Bible never tells us to pretend we are not hurting.
Instead, it meets us right where we are: God is near, His strength is enough, and our pain is not the end of the story.

Pain comes in many forms. Some of it shows on the outside, and some of it no one else can see. Start with the kind of pain you are carrying today, and let these Bible verses for pain meet you there.

How to use these Bible verses when you are in pain.
- Choose one verse, not ten. Pain makes it hard to concentrate. One verse, held close, is enough for today.
- Read it aloud slowly. Hearing God’s Word in your own voice can steady a racing mind.
- Pray it back to God. For example: “Lord, You said Your grace is sufficient for me. I need that grace today.”
- Keep it where you will see it. Write it on a card by your bed, on your phone’s lock screen, or on the bathroom mirror.
- Share it with someone. Sending a verse to a friend who is hurting can comfort you both.
1. Comfort in God’s presence (11 verses)
Reflection: Pain can make us feel unseen, but these passages affirm that God’s presence does not disappear when life becomes difficult. Faith step: Choose one promise and pray it in your own words.
- Psalm 34:18: The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
- Isaiah 41:10: God strengthens, helps and holds you up. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
- Psalm 23:4: Fear no evil in the darkest valley, because God is with you. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
- Psalm 46:1: God is a present help, right now. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

2. Strength and endurance (10 verses)
Reflection: Strength in Scripture is not always the absence of weakness; often it is the grace to continue one day at a time. Faith step: Ask God for strength for one manageable task today.
When you feel you cannot take another step, God’s strength meets you in your weakness.
- Romans 5:3–5: Suffering produces patience, experience and hope. “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
- 2 Corinthians 1:3–4: God is the Father of mercies who comforts in all our troubles. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
- Philippians 4:13: Strength through Christ. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
- 2 Corinthians 12:9: God’s grace is enough, and His strength shows best in weakness. “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”
- Isaiah 40:31: Waiting on the Lord renews strength. “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:8–9: Pressed, but not crushed. “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;”

- Joshua 1:9: Courage, because God goes with you. “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
- 1 Peter 5:10: Suffering lasts a while; God will restore you. “But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.”
3. Healing for body and heart (10 verses)
Reflection: We can bring both physical symptoms and emotional wounds to God while seeking appropriate medical and personal support. Faith step: Pray specifically and take one practical step toward care.
Whether your pain is physical or emotional, these verses invite you to bring it to the God who heals. Sometimes He heals in this life, and sometimes He carries us through until the day all pain is gone. Either way, He is faithful. Keep praying, and keep seeing your doctor too.
- Jeremiah 17:14: A simple prayer for healing. “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”
- Psalm 103:2–3: Remember what God has done. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;”
- Isaiah 53:5: Christ was wounded for us. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

4. Praying through pain (10 verses)
Reflection: An honest cry can be a prayer. God does not require perfect words from hurting people. Faith step: Tell Him what is most difficult today, even if all you can manage is a sentence.
Pain can leave us without words. These verses show that God welcomes honest cries, and some can become your own prayers.
- Psalm 61:2: A prayer for an overwhelmed heart. “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
- Romans 8:26: When you cannot pray, the Spirit prays for you. “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
- Philippians 4:6–7: Prayer brings a peace beyond understanding. “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
- 1 Peter 5:7: Cast your cares on Him. “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
- Psalm 55:22: God will sustain you. “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
- Psalm 18:6: God hears your cry. “In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.”
- Psalm 42:11: Speak hope to your own soul. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.”
- Psalm 121:1–2: Look up for help. “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
- Psalm 56:8: God keeps every tear. “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
- Hebrews 4:15–16: Jesus understands, so come boldly. “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
5. Hope for the future (10 verses)
Reflection: Biblical hope does not dismiss present suffering; it remembers that suffering will not have the final word. Faith step: Write one promise of God where you can see it tomorrow.
Your pain is real, but it is not forever. These verses lift your eyes to what God has promised.
- Revelation 21:4: An end to tears, sorrow and pain. “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
- Romans 8:18: Present suffering compared with future glory. “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
- 2 Corinthians 4:17–18: Light affliction, eternal glory. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
- Romans 8:28: God works all things for good. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
- Psalm 30:5: Joy comes in the morning. “For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
Lamentations 3:22–23: New mercies every morning. “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Psalm 126:5: Tears sown, joy reaped. “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”
Jeremiah 29:11: God’s thoughts toward you are peace. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

Frequently asked questions about pain and the Bible
Why does God allow pain?
Scripture does not give every answer we long for, but it does tell us that God is present in our pain (Psalm 34:18), that He can work even suffering for good (Romans 8:28), and that one day pain will end forever (Revelation 21:4). Jesus Himself suffered, so we have a Savior who understands (Hebrews 4:15).
Is it wrong to cry out to God when I am hurting?
No. Many psalms are honest cries of pain. God invites you to pour out your heart to Him, and He hears (Psalm 18:6).
What is a short Bible verse to hold on to in pain?
Try 2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for thee.” Or Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Write one on a card and keep it close.
A prayer for when you are hurting
Lord, You know the pain I carry today, even the parts I cannot put into words. Thank You that You are near to the brokenhearted and that Your grace is enough for me. Give me strength for this day, peace in this moment, and hope for what is ahead. Hold me up when I cannot stand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
