A Simple Bible Study Guide

You can begin studying the Bible with a short passage, a notebook, and a willingness to learn. Use these steps at your own pace.

1. Pray and Read

Ask God for understanding. Read Psalm 23 in the King James Version twice, then read it aloud if that helps you concentrate.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1 (KJV)

2. Observe What the Passage Says

Who is speaking? What does the passage say about God? Note repeated words, descriptions, promises, and commands. Write observations before drawing conclusions.

3. Read in Context

Read the surrounding verses. Consider the kind of writing, its original audience, and the situation it describes. In Psalm 23, notice both peaceful places and the valley of the shadow of death. God’s care does not mean life contains no hardship.

4. Understand the Meaning

Summarize the passage in one or two sentences. Distinguish what the text actually says from what you assume. If something is unclear, consult a reliable Bible reference or ask a trusted pastor rather than forcing an answer.

5. Put It Into Practice

Ask: What does this teach me to believe, change, or do? Choose one specific response. For Psalm 23, you might bring a concern to God in prayer and seek wise support instead of carrying it alone.

6. Pray and Review

Turn your learning into a short prayer. Revisit your notes later in the week and consider how your understanding and actions have developed.
